Tough-as-nails Bill Rizer has returned to kick some alien butt in Neo Contra, the follow-up to Konami’s smash hit, Shattered Soldier. Joined by a mysterious samurai named Yagyu Jaguar Genbei, they embark on an adventure to destroy the…ah whatever! Have the stories behind Contra games ever mattered? This intense arcade-style shooter drops you into a beautiful 3D world populated by monsters, enemy soldiers, and giant hulking behemoths that will all die by your hands. In full 3D, you play Neo Contra from an isometric perspective, and for the most part the system works despite some aiming issues. The game’s on the short side, and it’s for some reason a little easier than past incarnations, but it’s a fun shooter that’s great to play in short bursts. Plus, its zany characters and gorgeous FMV cut scenes put it so far over the top it’d be a crime not to pick it up. It’s not the best game in the series, but Neo Contra is a welcome addition, and at the very least deserves a rent.

Nightshade Review

Nightshade is about a kunoichi (female ninja) named Hibana. She’s tasked by the mysterious Shinobi Organization with retrieving the cursed blade, Akujiki. Throughout her adventure, she’ll fight agents of the Nakatomi Conglomerate and try to beat back a new wave of Hellspawn overflowing Tokyo. Hibana’s deadly ninja skills, not to mention your reaction time, will be put to the test in this fun, straight-up action game. Challenging opponents, extended “tate” combos, and difficulty settings for any skill level make for extensive replay value and plenty to like in Nightshade.

Naruto: Uzumaki Chronicles 2 Review

Uzumaki Chronicles 2 is a stunted sequel that doesn’t expand upon the original game’s formula. While the missions bring slight enthusiasm to anime and beat-em-up addicts, there’s little motivation to keep players going. Beat up thugs and/or puppets, solve the occasional puzzle and then continue this for several stages. Presentation doesn’t electrify either, with its weak visuals and audio. If the gameplay had an upgrade system that actually showed improvements, it would’ve worked better — especially with two players. Unfortunately, it winds up being one of Naruto’s more disappointing adventures.

The manic fighting from the Naruto series injected into a full-fledged adventure game. Guide the spikey-haired ninja-in-training through different mini-games and in both face-to-face and long-range battles that drive the story forward. Fans of the franchise will be drawn to the game’s authentic anime stylings, but might soon be turned off by repetitive missions, brainless AI and problems with saving and restarting missions. Uzumaki Chronicles would have been a sharp game three years ago, but now it’s as dull as a cardboard shuriken.

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 2 follows the “if it ain’t broke” rule, as it doesn’t differ that much from the first game. Some new mini-game segments add an intricate change-up to the formula, but the controls rely on quick button presses for survival. That doesn’t mean it runs out of steam, though. The sequel has its fair share of mindless fun, especially against other friends in Vs. Duel mode. Hardcore anime fans should also like buying items in the Tanzaku Market, such as bonus cards and other goods.

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja is one of those rare, fabled games that appeal far beyond the fanbase of its license. The controls are easy to learn, but thanks to the fast-paced action, the gameplay is difficult to master. Winning a fight isn’t just a matter of repeatedly exploiting the same move over or blocking until there’s an opening, but by knowing what moves to use in a given situation. And between the various modes and objectives, there’s enough to keep players busy for a while, and that’s before multiplayer comes into the equation.

Naruto: Narultimate Hero Review

If you import titles regularly, you’re probably also familiar with Japanese animation, better known as anime. Naruto is one of the top-rated anime shows airing weekly on TV Tokyo, and Bandai just released a PlayStation 2 fighting game based on the hit anime, and its manga (comic book). Naruto: Narultimate Hero debuted at number one on the Japanese sales charts and it’s one of the better fighting games based on am animated series. While it runs circles around Dragonball Z: Budokai, it still can’t keep up with Tekken or Virtua Fighter. Narultimate Hero is mainly for fans of the series, but should also appeal to casual fighting game fans as well.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Review

The dark, gritty cyber punk world of Ghost in the Shell is brought to life in Bandai’s Stand Alone Complex for the PS2. Playing as Motoko Kusunagi and other characters, you run around shooting anything that moves in a quest to unravel the mystery behind these beings that are controlling people’s minds. While the game’s controls are suspect and it’s easy to beat, it’s still a quality third person shooter filled with action, realistic-looking explosions, and footage from the popular animated series of the same name. It’s by no means a fantastic game, but it satisfied my urge to blow stuff up, and even though it didn’t necessarily last long, I was entertained for most of the time.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories Review

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories marks the fifth chapter in the series for the PlayStation 2, but it also ends up being the weakest. This entry still gives the player plenty to do, with numerous missions to tackle, hidden goodies to find and plenty of violence — at $20, no less. However, the graphics show clear signs of being rushed and Rockstar removed the multiplayer modes. Hardcore fans won’t mind diving into these Stories, but everyone else should just wait for GTA IV.

Two years following the release of the critically-acclaimed Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Rockstar Games and Rockstar North have returned with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, a sequel bursting with new features and things to do. Sure, the engine’s about the same, and some of you may not be able to stomach the mature presentation, but those willing to invest the time will be rewarded with countless hours of rewarding gameplay. San Andreas is deep, controversial, and it’s one of the best gaming experiences for the PS2.
